Forensics research

Chelsea Base and Darcy Colahan are researching available forensics pieces for presentation next year. Their platform event is duet. Students have the availability to use forensics fanatics to find pieces not only in duet but in prose, poetry, humorous and serious solos as well as being able to practice and improvise duet acting. Chelsey and Darcy performed a duet this season and plan to perform a duet again next year.

Dream trip to DC via imovie

Ashlyn Wiens is working on a research project for Mr. Froese's sophomore English class. Her dream trip is to Washington DC. Her final product will be in imovie format. Her product, an imovie, is a compilation of work on the internet including facts and photos of Washington DC. She will have a soft music backgroud on her movie and will use talk over audio to explain her material. Good Work Ashlyn!

Virtual Advertisements

Mr. Froese's Sophomore Classes are making virtual advertisements to "faraway places". Alexus Hattabaugh and Savanna Case are virtually going to Miami! By doing research, gathering pictures, estimating costs and using Imovie format they are going on a dream vacation. They used iphoto, web cams, photoshop and videos to accomplish this mission. The snowball microphone helps for good sound clarity! In this photo they are working on audio over the top of photos and videos in imovie application!

Sixteen Tons and what do you get?

Did you realize that the lyrics for Tennessee Ernie Ford song entitiled Sixteen Tons....can be connected to the novel October Sky?
Mrs. McWilliams classes are reading the novel set
in West Virginia in the time of Sputnik. An unlikely boy turns his
interests to rocketry instead of coal mines. Playing the song in class brought so many connections from book to song. Things such as themes, character traits, time in history and setting of story could all be connected! Freshman English students enjoyed the "old time" music. They were surprised to learn what being in debt to the town store was! We used to have charge accounts at Ike's food market in Inman!!

Animoto.....

After reading the book, The Cay, Mrs. Garst has been following up with various student projects in reflection. One of the assignments was to make a commercial to hook a future reader. Rather than do a powerpoint, or re-enacting a scene with flip cameras, some students chose to complete their project with the help of Animoto. We have never tried this before in a group setting and practiced some "just-in-time learning". After we applied and were accepted for a free educational account with Animoto, the students were able to log in and learn the makings of a commercial. We've learned that a paragraph on the screen is not always in the viewers best interest when trying to sell the viewer a book. We have also learned a bit about summarizing the book or a part of it, and that something needs to change within every 10 seconds (learning directly & indirectly) in order to keep the viewers attention. The creation of titles for the videos are limited to 30 characters and up to 2 lines per slide using Animoto's settings, with some flexibility incorporating the SMART Notebook and customizing a slides to upload screenshots. We've learned that picture after picture, or a ton of text doesn't always sell the viewer on the product. Uploading photos, screenshots, text, and selecting from animoto's music or uploading other, the students have been able to assemble a commercial in a minimal amount of time.

This is an example of time crunch classroom multimedia projects. We had 1 day to officially work on it in class, and several days to work on it in homeroom, before or after school (spare time) if they did so choose.

Thought I'd share some English Commercials....

I first gave them a sample of this to sample of this:
that took me about 5 minutes to complete and told them they could do far better.

They could create their projects in whatever media form they wanted, but Animoto was the flavor of the day!

Wiki work at IJHS

Students use personal, class blogs to enhance writing skills

What’s a wiki? That may be the question asked by parents of Inman Junior High School students when their children tell them about their latest language arts assignment.

A wiki is a software application which allows its users to quickly set up a site for sharing information in groups – or with the general public through online blogs and workgroups. IJH students in Tami Garst’s language arts classes are using wikis to not only share their thoughts with their classmates through their personal blogs, they are also using them as a method to discuss the novels they are currently reading in class.
